Howdy folks. I just thought I would give a wee report on my new local pond which I fished for the first time today. I took some pics on the phone (forgot the camera) and I will try and load them later.

Arrived about 1000hrs. No-one else there, just as I like it. Fished to the left of the entrance near the corner. Bought some banana flavouring, hooks, float and got some bread flake/pellet mix (a big bucket full) and the days fishing for about 1000Bt. Foreigner prices are more than local as you can imagine.

Started with the standard float feeder and dropped hook. I had added minced mackerel to a bit of the flake, with a small mack strip hanging below the feeder. A bit of movement round the float, but no real takes. Then I put the polaroids on and saw several large fish moving round the float, so I cast out with my small rod using a hook with mack strip, no weight, swivels, etc. Landed, and bang, straight in. Eventually netted and it was a Mekong Cat about 12lbs. Good fight on the light gear.

Changed it up on the big rod. Feeder and drop hook on the bottom, this time with catfish eggs added to the flake and on the drop hook. Cast in and wait.

On the small rod I fired in a lump of cat eggs. 5 mins later a good take on the small rod - large redtail cat. A first for me so I was well pleased. Size about 15 I reckon. Good fight and a powerful fish.

Another take on the small rod after that on the basic flake/pellet mix hard on the bottom - no feeder just a lump close in. Fish took the line out to the left and into and under the bank. Fish eventually lost. This happened twice during the day and I am sure they were redtails as it was the same power surge each time.

Later on I switched back to the float with both rods. Again the small rod gets the take - a good fish and its all over the place. 25 minutes later and I am still there. By this time the 5 quid reel, stolen only a few hours earlier from one of my offspring, is well and truly shagged. I had seen the fins a couple of times and I was sure it was a Mekong, but at the net, behold! A very nice Siamese Carp. Big, heavy and with a mouth that could have swallowed my shoe easily. A cracker of a fish even if I say so myself. Weight wise I am not so sure as its the first time I have caught anything as deep bodied - say 25? Maybe more. I will check out some pics online and see if there are any that look similar. Bait this time was flake/egg mix with an egg sac on the dropper. Another first for me, so I am well chuffed. :)):))

I eventually hooked a fish on the big rod - hooked snapped. Sods law. As such I was never actually able to put any of the fish under pressure. Small rod (6ft) and 8lb line seemed to be the order of the day!

There is a wee restaurant there and the menu looks good. Usual soft drinks, etc and shaded areas. A nice wee spot.

Cheers

Hi All,
After hooking into a big one near Samal Island in the Philippines and losing it, I decided to upgrade my tackle a good bit. Has anyone had any experience with the Daiwa electric reels? I just purchased a pair of them online, used. The first is a "Tanacom SS-80 4 Speed" and the second is a "Powerful Tanacom GS-80", also a 4 Speed. Both have a ton of nice auto or manual features like depth counter, which includes a depth from the bottom so you can see where you're getting strikes, a bite alarm, a free spool adjustment for lighter or heavier gear, an auto rewind, and other neat things I haven't figured out yet. It would be nice to hear from anyone who has used them, or other electric reels with things to do or avoid doing while using them.
Thanks,
John

Would appricate your inputs...

I think the title says it all. Needless to say I have been doing tonnes or may be almost too much of Reds fishing this summer over at Lau Fau Shan especially at Ho Jie's. And I have been waiting and waiting for the impending arrival of the new Cobia stock.

For Ho Jie, I ask them everytime I am there. The woman says winter, but the husband I believe says may be after Mid-Autumn Festival.

For those of you who are huge fans of big fighting species such as Cobias and Amberjacks (sadly no GTs), I have a small suggestion, perhaps we can set up an alert for ourselves. Obviously we all fish at different salt ponds around Hong Kong, it would be fantastic if we could keep each other well informed with the latest stock arrival so we can go and enjoy these coming species in the most timely fashion.

I will cover Ho Jie of course and will probably take a peek at Old Friend Pond from time to time. But, frankly it doesn't matter who covers which ponds and where, we should just sound the ALERT as and when the new stocks arrive.

What do you think guys ?

I have a question, why are the ponds in Hong Kong unable to stock GTs and keep them alive ?

Some have said temperature and some have said salinity of the water in ponds.

Well, Singapore is hot and they now have a place aptly named the GT Pond which stocks of course GTs and Cobias. I have spoken to some of the pond owners here and they say even for Cobias you must wait until Winter. So, here I am scratching my head, wait until winter ? Singapore doesn't have winter and their pond Cobias break rods.

I am not a marine biologist, does anyone have a clue ? Any takers ?

Hi all,

Just arrived from england where I do a bit of estuary bass fishing. Heard there was some action in both Peng Chau and Lantau but am a bit short on details on best locations and best bait (live shrimp / lure / worm ?).

Also some advice on local usual rigs would be very much appreciated. UK is usually rag worm, fish a foot off the bottom about an hour before and after high tide.

Equally if anyone wants some company on an outing would be a pleasure to hook up.

Thanks all.

Went down on Saturday for a quick morning session since it?s been ages since I've fished any stocked ponds. Tried Lau Fau Shan - first spot was the one with the poster of the big bass jumping out of the water (lol). Got there around 9ish and none of the owners were there yet, only an angler who advised to fish ahead and pay later. My set-up for the day was my loyal Shimano Base Rise Spinner Rod/ Shimano Ultegra Reel loaded by 16 lb PE main line and 20 lb leader. I started off with a hard plastic and within my second cast I was on, peeling my braid with no hesitation and swam along the banks (I know I seen this before lol). I knew immediately this was grouper trying to get back into its hole and before I knew it, everything came to stand still. The hole was just a few feet away and once in, it never came out for a peek. Tried various method, still felt the bugger on the end of the line but I couldn?t manage to get it out and eventually had to play a bit of a tug-of-war before my line snapped.

Around 9:30am, the owners arrived, unloaded 10 big barrels of fish, mostly permits/ mangrove jacks. Once they finished unloading, the guy came over and asked me what type of fishing I was doing and immediately when he saw my lure he said "No", he said only bait fishing in this pond. This pond is better suited for lure fishing than other around the areas, however, since lure fishing wasn't allowed the next stop was Ho Jie's, another 5-10 mins away.

The main pond at Ho Jie's was in pristine condition, clear water with visibility up to 1-2 meter and suddenly I saw one of most amazing things a saltwater angler would appreciate - school of red-drums (redfish), over 100 fish weighing a minimum 7-10 lbs which. I've only seen such things with other species at the oil rig or at Ocean Park aquarium. The drums where in various stages of adult hood ? some still had whitish/ silver colour visible, but the bulk where in bronzey/ amber colour. I quickly assembled a few lures, hard and soft plastic, both top/mid/ bottom lures, but they took no interest in the lure and nor were they interested in bait (load of anglers fishing). I seen this situation before in other ponds with new fish (Cobias in Nam Chung, including the one that?s closed now). The pack was swimming in a circular motion in the middle of the pond, however, I noticed a few breakaway packs (3-5) that were sometimes coming close to the banks. I ran the lure along the banks and suddenly my lure came face-to-face with a bronzey (over a meter along) with some sidekicks. I?m not really sure what happened here as the fish/ lure played a bit of chicken and collided, once the bronzey hit my lure it immediately did a U turn and I was on. It very rare for fish to hit lures head-on and it wasn?t possible for me to change direction since it would have spooked the beast. I?ve caught many drums in my life (natural/ payponds), however, nothing of this size. The sheer power to ratio of this beast on light tackle is amazing and we fought for about 10-15 minutes. The net provided at this pond was no way going to bring this bad-boy up since only his head/ tiny bit of his body was going to fit and the rest was exposed. A lure angler nearby came over (Japanese angler based in Shenzhen), he was amazed to see the size of drums in this pond/ HK. We exchanged some fishing info and it seem likes there some black bass action up in Shenzhen. Since the sun was baking everything around us, I decided keep the beast in the water and managed to get a shot with my iphone (not the best pic though).

Overall, a good day out and about ? however, the sun was scorching, stinking hot even if you were hiding under the umbrella (not a good idea) since there was no breeze! Definitely a place to go in the next couple of weeks, especially once those drums are settled and in their predatory mode.

Tight lines.

Yellowfin

PS: Chinese Mackeral are out and about, light jigging action to be found not far from HK waters.
