thanks much for this but i've been there and you are right, don't expect gold.
past days, i see again how vietnamese tend to overfish even the smallest waterway. just dragging their nets almost everyday. really upsetting.

I will be visiting Ho Chi Minh... any chance of fishing there? Is there any ponds like Bung San Lake in Bangkok?

I have done some research on the net. Mentions of several fishing ponds but no names and addresses. Think your best bet is to get your hotel to help you arrange with a taxi driver who will know for sure. In terms of size of the striped catfish you will surely be disappointed but if you like connecting with local anglers you should definitely go for it.

There is an address for a tackle shop on one of the threads on here but speaking English probably a problem. Look forward to your report. Good luck.
