Philippines Like Thailand but with a lot more depth. Mostly safe but it pays to take precautions. Some areas are unspoiled and have great fishing while others are fished out or even destroyed entirely by dynamite fishing.

Default Hair rigs and boiles

I would like to try but for someone who has never done serious carp fishing, like myself, I am a bit overwhelmed with the techniques involved. I will give the subject more attention and hopefully start incorporating them into my efforts.

If there is anywhere not too far from Davao and you are in the area I can make the boilies and hair rigs and we can go together.

Default The lake is getting lower

Yeah, the lake is getting lower.

Concentrates the fish I suppose.

Let me know how you do. While I haven't been spending much time up there lately, I may be moving up there, at least part time, in the next half year or so.

If I am up there I would welcome the chance to have some company for fishing.

Good luck

Ted

reading what you guys would like to do makes me wish i can go back to phils. in a snap. here in vietnam where i am now, at least temporarily, have no saltwater fishing activities that i know of. i really hope i'm mistaken. well...if anybody can point me where to go and who to hook with i would greatly appreciate it. im tired of catching tilapia, catfish and snakehead here.

Yes i took part in the tournament last year , it was my first try at Gamefishing , got 2 good strikes but loss both fish , just the head of the bait fish ( flying fish)left with the back hook hanging bare grr hehe
also i took the wrong gear , my leaders were 250lb too heavy they said , my skirts and plugs were too big
But next time hehe , always next time , trolling the flying fish is the way to go , most of the fish were caught that way and there were many fish caught .
the website is down at this time , but as soon as its up and running i will post a link here , there are many pics there
i have never tried Carp fishing but i would love to try .
Chris
I went carp fishing on the Pelangi river. It is a tributary of the Mindanao River. The Mindanao river system is the second largest river system in the Philippines (behind the Cagayan River system). The Pelangi River flows through Bukidnon, a relatively peaceful province of Mindanao. I fished a large manmade lake near the city of Don Carlos (between Valancia and Davao). I fished with the locals using bamboo poles. We caught carp up to 9 kilos along the shoreline using prawns for bait. My intent is to return with my fishing gear to cast out and seek the larger specimens. I will will report back after my next trip out to the provinces (although I am a bit distracted with my deep sea fishing exploratons)

I just checked the location of the lake on Google Earth. I reckon it would take about 4 hours to drive there from Davao. Thats a bit too far for me.

I have been searching for a place to go freshwater fishing somewhere within an hour or so from Davao but so far, no luck.

I don't mind paying a day fee and paying for anything we want to take home.

I really like lake and pond fishing but not little tiddlers in a tiny pond like at Eden Park. Carp would be great, even good size tilapia or anything big enough to put up some fight would be good.

Does anyone know anywhere?

Default Saltwater

I'm not too familiar with fishing on the lake or river, only on salt water.
Been out a few times trolling and bottom fishing on the fiberglass boat when I stayed in Mantangale Resort. Its located about 1.5hr drive east from Cagayan de Oro. Its not cheap but not much options in Cagayan de Oro. Its near the port for the Camiguin ferry.

One can tell when the huge yellowfins are around if you drive by Salay (east of Cagayan de Oro) in the early mornings. The tunas are displayed for sale by the highway. By the size of the tails, they're pretty big. I understand they catch them night fishing.

One can tell when the sailfish are around if you drive by Opol/El Salvador area (west of Cagayan de Oro), the sailfish caught are displayed and sold by the highway.

There's lots of fish to be caught but finding a boat for hire to fish can be challenging.
