Philippines Like Thailand but with a lot more depth. Mostly safe but it pays to take precautions. Some areas are unspoiled and have great fishing while others are fished out or even destroyed entirely by dynamite fishing.

Default fishing misamis oriental

I wanted to start a thread on fishing the Misamis Oiental area. I am living in Cagayan de Oro and am hearing about some good fishing opportunities in the areas off the coast here (Majalacar Bay, Gingoog Bay, Camiguin, Island etc.) I am new to the area and ready to start hooking up. If anyone here is familiar with the area or resident to it please feel free to contact me. The information I am getting so far is very promising. Hopefully my first-hand experience will confirm my expectations.
My intent is to post my fishing adventures and encourage others to join in the fun I hope to find.

Ted

Default Misamis Oriental

hello Ted ,
i will be moving to CdO (from UK)next Aug full time , and plan to explore the area for fishing , perhaps we can "hook up" when I'm there.

I'm taking part in the 3 day tournament on 15th-17th April in Siargao if you want to tag along , so many fish caught last year , its worth the trip just to learn some tips from the boatmen and other anglers .

Default Ready to fish

Hi Chris

I have seen your posts here and elsewhere (yahoo groups). CDO is a great place to be.
I am on my way to getting started on fishing the area as I bought a boat this past weekend. An 11 meter, native-style, boat with GPS and fishfinder. Also met some locals into fishing (western style?) and received some good input on areas to hook up marlins, sailfish, tuna, wahoo, mahimahi and more. Guess we'll see when I start getting the liner wet.
Surigao sounds great. Have you been to the tournament before? Who did you hook up with for the competion---are you competing?
Hey, I know you british guys like Carp fishing. There are plenty of large Carp here on Mindanao.
I have big expectations for the fishing here.

Ted

Ted , thats great you have your boat already , did you get the fishfinder/ GPS with the boat , or brought with you? i would love to take a look when i get there

Yes i took part in the tournament last year , it was my first try at Gamefishing , got 2 good strikes but loss both fish , just the head of the bait fish ( flying fish)left with the back hook hanging bare grr hehe
also i took the wrong gear , my leaders were 250lb too heavy they said , my skirts and plugs were too big
But next time hehe , always next time , trolling the flying fish is the way to go , most of the fish were caught that way and there were many fish caught .
the website is down at this time , but as soon as its up and running i will post a link here , there are many pics there
i have never tried Carp fishing but i would love to try .

Default Carp fishing in Mindanao

I went carp fishing on the Pelangi river. It is a tributary of the Mindanao River. The Mindanao river system is the second largest river system in the Philippines (behind the Cagayan River system). The Pelangi River flows through Bukidnon, a relatively peaceful province of Mindanao. I fished a large manmade lake near the city of Don Carlos (between Valancia and Davao). I fished with the locals using bamboo poles. We caught carp up to 9 kilos along the shoreline using prawns for bait. My intent is to return with my fishing gear to cast out and seek the larger specimens. I will will report back after my next trip out to the provinces (although I am a bit distracted with my deep sea fishing exploratons)

Have you tried boilies and hair rigs? That is often the best way to get the big ones.
